technology,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0been\u00a0closely\u00a0following\u00a0recent\u00a0headlines on: climate adaptation,\u00a0expected\u00a0water shortages, Europe\u2019s record fire season and how\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heliopsmag.com\/media\/website_pages\/airattack\/magazine-issues\/AA42\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rapid fire\u00a0response is undervalued<\/a>.\u00a0Here\u00a0are some of our reflections we wanted to share:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Brazil\u2019s president Luna called into life the Tropical Forest Forever Facility\u00a0during #COP30\u00a0with a\u00a0medium-term funding goal\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cop30.br\/en\/news-about-cop30\/over-usd-5-5-billion-announced-for-tropical-forest-forever-facility-as-53-countries-endorse-the-historic-tfff-launch-declaration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$125 billion\u00a0<\/a>.\u00a0Thus,\u00a0he indirectly set a value for tropical forest beyond commercial exploitability such\u00a0as cattle grazing grounds, soybean\u00a0fields\u00a0or hardwood\u00a0source.\u00a0Some\u00a0still see\u00a0forests\u00a0as valuable\u00a0only\u00a0when\u00a0they\u00a0can be harvested\u00a0for\u00a0timber, cleared\u00a0for grazing\u00a0or crop\u00a0cultivation.\u00a0We have yet to recognize\u00a0the full\u00a0systemic\u00a0value\u00a0of forests\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0tropical,\u00a0boreal\u00a0or temperate &#8211;\u00a0in terms of\u00a0rendered\u00a0(nature) services\u00a0such as\u00a0sequestering\u00a0CO<sub>2<\/sub>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Forests\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0safe anymore.\u00a0Clearing and logging are\u00a0one\u00a0set of issues.\u00a0The increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires poses a\u00a0far greater threat. They are\u00a0turning\u00a0forests from net carbon sinks to net carbon emitters.\u00a0Australia\u2019s Black Saturday Bushfires in\u00a02009;\u00a0\u00a0Canada\u2019s\u00a02023 fires;\u00a02025\u00a0California\u2019s January fires\u00a0and\u00a0Europe\u2019s\u00a0record\u00a0&gt;1 million hectares of\u00a0burnt\u00a0area-\u00a0CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions keep\u00a0rising.\u00a0In\u00a02023,\u00a0the 8.3 GT CO2 emitted from wildfires outstripped those from the transport sector, previously ranked 3<sup>rd<\/sup>. In 2024, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-10\/GHG-21_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Meteorological Organization<\/a>\u00a0reported the largest increase in atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub> due to\u00a0wildfires.\u00a0Even\u00a0intermittent wet and rainy summers\u00a0in\u00a0Central\u00a0or\u00a0Northern\u00a0Europe cannot mask\u00a0the issue anymore: fierce\u00a0wildfires\u00a0are\u00a0going to stay with us\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0and\u00a0will grow bigger if we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0react\u00a0and adapt\u00a0<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Meanwhile, the wildfire problem is\u00a0exacerbated\u00a0by yet another climate change induced challenge: water shortage. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/nov\/29\/climate-crisis-depleting-europe-groundwater-reserves-analysis?utm_term=693177c2700ec8c7b623370b17b855d5&amp;utm_campaign=DownToEarth&amp;utm_source=esp&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;CMP=greenlight_email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guardian<\/a>\u00a0writes\u00a0that \u201cEurope\u2019s water reserves are drying up\u201d.\u00a0Freshwater storage is shrinking across Europe, not just in the South, but also in Poland or the UK.\u00a0Regarding\u00a0firefighting water, one could say\u00a0airtankers\u00a0can scoop seawater where countries have access to the sea.\u00a0Yet\u00a0even their tanks need to be cleaned\u00a0from the salt\u00a0with fresh water\u00a0post-mission\u00a0to\u00a0prevent\u00a0corrosion.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Finally, financing\u00a0necessary adaptation technology to fight forest fires\u00a0is only\u00a0slowly\u00a0rising\u00a0to the challenge.\u00a0Potential investors fear cumbersome public procurement\u00a0processes,\u00a0yet there is a\u00a0potential\u00a0private\u00a0market\u00a0encompassing\u00a0helicopter or drone operators\u00a0frequently\u00a0contracted in fire emergencies,\u00a0utility,\u00a0energy\u00a0or\u00a0infrastructure\u00a0companies keen to\u00a0safeguard their assets.\u00a0In the words of\u00a0Morphosis Solutions \u201cprivate investment in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.prod.website-files.com\/68c2c290145789d44eaa01eb\/6909bd32f7e85a0535884bd1_The%20Rise%20of%20the%20Adaptation%20Economy%20-%20Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adaptation<\/a>\u00a0remains only a fraction of global climate finance\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Current\u00a0funding in firefighting technology\u00a0often\u00a0targets\u00a0AI-based solutions for prevention,\u00a0detection,\u00a0or post-event recovery. Yet,\u00a0AI does not suppress fires.
